How to make a UPI QR code for your shop or payments
Reading out a UPI ID, spelling it twice and waiting for the customer to type it correctly is slow. A QR code does it in a second: the customer scans, the payment app opens with your name and ID filled in, and they pay. You can make one yourself, for free, in a minute.
Make the code
- Open UPI QR Code and type your UPI ID exactly as your payment app shows it, for example name@okbank, with no spaces.
- Type the name of the person or shop. This is what the payer sees.
- Leave the amount empty for a code that works for any payment. Fill it in for a bill or a fixed fee.
- Check the code that appears, then download the PNG.
Check it before you rely on it
- Scan the code with a different phone from the one that owns the UPI ID, in a UPI app.
- Check that the name and the UPI ID in the app are right, and the amount if you set one.
- Make a small real payment to yourself or a friend, and see that it arrives.
- If the app shows an error, look for a typo in the UPI ID.
Printing it for the counter
- Print it at least 5 cm square, with the white border around it left in.
- Use dark squares on a white background. Coloured codes are fine, but black on white scans fastest.
- Put it in a clear sleeve or under plastic, so it does not get scratched or smudged.
- Choose High error correction if it will be handled a lot.
- Put your name or the shop name beside it, so customers can see that it is yours.
With an amount, or without
A code with no amount is for the counter: every customer scans the same code and types what they owe. A code with an amount is for one bill, a fixed price, an invoice or a delivery: the app opens with the sum ready. Make a new code for each amount, and do not reuse a bill's code for another customer.
If a lot of money goes through your shop every day, ask your bank for a merchant QR, which comes with settlement and reports. A code from this page is a good fit for individuals, freelancers and small sellers.
