Repair a damaged PDF

A download that stopped halfway, an email attachment that says "the file is damaged", a PDF that opens blank. Add it here and the tool rebuilds the file from whatever is still readable, on your own device.

    How it works

    1. Add the PDF that will not open. Several files can be repaired together.
    2. Press Repair PDF. The file is rebuilt from what can still be read.
    3. Download the repaired copy and open it to check it.

    Before you repair

If the PDF came from an email or a website, download it again first. Many "damaged" files are just downloads that did not finish, and a second download is the best repair.

Keep the original as well. The repaired file is a separate copy.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside your browser, on your own device. Your files are never sent to a server, and you can confirm that in your browser's network tab. Close the tab and they're gone.

What kinds of damage can it fix?

A missing or wrong table of contents inside the file (the cross-reference table), a file with junk in front of it, and a download that was cut off partway. The tool finds the pages that are still in the file and builds a fresh PDF around them.

    Will I get everything back?

Not always. What is still in the file comes back; what was lost cannot. For a download that stopped partway, the pages that did not arrive are gone, and a page cut in the middle may come back incomplete. The result says how many pages were saved, so compare it with what you expect.

What if the repair says it cannot help?

Then too little of the file is left to rebuild. Try downloading it again, or ask the sender for a new copy. A file that is not a PDF at all (a renamed picture, say) cannot be repaired.

What about a PDF with a password?

A protected file has to be unlocked first. Use Unlock PDF, then repair the unlocked copy if it is still damaged.

Is there a file size limit?

Each file can be up to 100 MB, and up to 300 MB in total. Because the work happens on your device, very large files depend on your available memory. A desktop browser handles them best.
