Convert PDF tables to Excel

Bank statements, invoices and reports arrive as PDFs, which are hard to sort or add up. This finds the tables in them and puts the rows and columns into a spreadsheet, with amounts as real numbers you can total. Your file is read on your own device and never uploaded.

    How it works

    1. Add your PDF. For a scan or a photo of a statement, leave "Read scanned pages" ticked and choose the language.
    2. Choose Excel or CSV, and how the tables become sheets.
    3. Press Convert to Excel, check the rows shown under the result, and download the file.

    Getting a clean result

Start from the PDF the bank or office gave you, not a photo or a printout that was scanned back in. A statement downloaded from net banking is a real PDF; a picture of a page has to be read with OCR first, which is slower and less exact.

If the file asks for a password every time you open it, unlock it first with Unlock PDF. Then convert the unlocked copy.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside your browser, on your own device. Your files are never sent to a server, and you can confirm that in your browser's network tab. Close the tab and they're gone.

Will it work on a bank statement?

Usually, if the statement is a real PDF (you can select its text). Tables that carry on from one page to the next are joined into one sheet, and the repeated header and page numbers are left out. Statements differ a lot, so look at the rows shown after converting and check a few totals against the original.

Does it work on a scanned PDF or a photo?

Yes, with "Read scanned pages" ticked (it is by default): pages that are only pictures are read with OCR first, then the tables are found in the text. It works best on a clean, straight scan with printed figures. Read the numbers against the original, because OCR can mistake a 5 for a 6 or miss a decimal point, and tables read from a picture can need more tidying than a real PDF. A statement downloaded from net banking is always the better source.

How does it decide what is a table?

A PDF has no table object, only pieces of text at positions on the page. The tool looks for rows whose pieces line up in columns, and uses ruling lines where there are any. That finds ordinary tables well; tables with merged cells, or text that wraps inside a cell, can come out as extra rows and may need tidying.

Why do some numbers stay as text?

On purpose. Account and phone numbers, PIN codes and anything with a leading zero would be changed or lose digits in Excel if they became numbers, so they stay as printed. Dates also stay as text, because "03/04/2024" means a different day in different countries. Amounts such as 1,250.50 and (500.00) become numbers, and an amount ending in Cr or Dr stays text because its sign is not certain. You can switch number conversion off to keep everything as printed.

    Excel or CSV?

Excel (.xlsx) keeps number formats, a bold frozen header and sized columns, and puts several tables on separate sheets. CSV is plain text that any program can import. If you pick CSV and there are several sheets, you get one CSV per sheet.

    Can I use a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. Use Unlock PDF on this site to remove the password (you need to know it), then add the unlocked copy here.

Is there a file size limit?

Each file can be up to 100 MB, and up to 300 MB in total. Because the work happens on your device, very large files depend on your available memory. A desktop browser handles them best.
