How to convert WebP to JPG or PNG, and why images save as WebP

You right-click a picture on a website, save it, and find a .webp file that your editor, your printer or an upload form will not accept. That is very common, and it is quick to fix once you know what is going on.

What WebP is, and why you get it

WebP is an image format designed for the web. Its files are usually smaller than JPG or PNG at a similar quality, so many websites serve their pictures as WebP to load faster. When you save one, you get the WebP version.

Every current browser can show WebP, but some older programs, printers and upload forms still expect JPG or PNG.

Which format to convert to

  • JPG for photographs and anything that must work everywhere. It is small and universal, but has no transparency.
  • PNG for logos, icons and graphics, especially with a transparent background. It is lossless but larger.

Converting step by step

  1. Open a WebP converter and add your files. You can add many at once.
  2. Choose JPG or PNG. For JPG, leave the quality at the default unless you need smaller files.
  3. Convert and download. Several files arrive together as a ZIP.

Things to know

  • Transparent areas become white when you convert to JPG. Convert to PNG to keep them.
  • Animated WebP files convert using only their first frame.
  • Converting to JPG is lossy, so keep your original WebP if you may need it later.
  • Conversion on this site happens in your browser, so your images are not uploaded.

Avoiding the problem next time

Some sites let you choose the format when you download. If a picture is going into a form or a document, convert it once and keep the JPG or PNG alongside the original.
